This section is intended for medical
professionals in South Africa who may need to order blood
or blood products from WPBTS.
WBBTS has implemented NAT testing (Nucleic Acid Amplification
Testing) on all donated blood from 1 October 2005. In brief,
NAT reduces the window period of HIV, Hepatitis B and C
infections, as NAT is able to detect extremely small quantities
of viral DNA and RNA. The reduction in window period is
expected to significantly increase the safety of the blood
supply. There are substantial, unavoidable costs associated
with the adoption of this new technology.
WPBTS remains committed to the supply of safe and cost effective
blood products, primarily in the Western Cape region, but
also nationally in times of urgent need.
