Life Blood issue 9
This 9th edition of Lifeblood focuses on the use of additives during transfusion as well as the role of anticoagulants and preservatives used in the preparation and storage of the components derived from whole blood donations. Particular attention is given to the wide range of plasma components and derivatives as a brief outline of their usage guidelines and recommended dosage schedules are included as a reference to assist clinicians in the appropriate transfusion of these products when clinically indicated. Clinicians should be aware that all these preparations from human plasma are antigenic and potentially capable of causing allergic or anaphylactic reactions. Furthermore, we provide an overview of blood component separation and quality control; address the question of whether blood should be warmed prior to transfusion, provide a description of the therapeutic phlebotomy programme and provide some quality assurance statistics. Current or potential blood donors may find the information on the new Blood Donor Centre particularly useful.

Welcome to the 10th edition of Lifeblood. The WP Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) remains committed to advancing transfusion science. Later this year, the WPBTS together with the South African National Blood Service will convene in Gauteng from 15 to 18 November at the 31st SA National Blood Transfusion Congress. The Congress is expected to attract participants from all fields within the blood transfusion industry. The theme for this year’s congress is “Sustainable Safe Blood: Mastering Change”. We are looking forward to a congress of high technical standard and the opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas and thereby to remain the transfusion leader in Africa.

2010, our 72nd year as a community orientated voluntary blood service promises to be eventful for WPBTS. We are committed to maintaining an adequate blood supply during the FIFA 2010 world cup soccer tournament. Sufficient additional collections for April and May have been scheduled to build up stocks. Constant haemovigilance and striving to achieve 100% risk free transfusions remains a priority from the "vein of the donor to the vein of the recipient". In order to minimize morbidity and mortality due to misdirected transfusions, clinicians and ward staff are urged to continue reporting labelling errors and suspected transfusion reactions promptly through the completion of the transfusion reaction form either obtainable from the wards or Blood Bank.
